Kannapolis was formed when James William Cannon, owner of Cannon Mills Company, purchased several farms in the area in 1906 to develop a mill. Cannon Mills eventually became the largest producer of household textiles in the world and the town of Kannapolis developed around the mill. The signature craftsman style homes built to provide housing for the mill workers still exists today.
With the decline and closing of the mill, last owned by Pillowtex, Kannapolis residents dug in and focused on their future. City leaders and citizens banded together identifying economic stimulus, parks and recreation, transportation and street improvements, and preserving history and heritage as the top priorities for Kannapolis.
As a result, several busines parks and new housing developments have been introduced to Kannapolis over the past several years. In addition, the most exciting development for Kannapolis has been the announcement of that the NC Research Campus, a 1 billion dollar joint venture between Dole Foods, Duke University and the University of North Carolina system, will be built on the site of the former mill.
Located in Cabarrus County, northeast of Charlotte, Kannapolis is an attractive bedroom community to Charlotte, NC providing affordable housing, a short commute to the Charlotte city limits, high performing schools, and an exciting ecomomic future!
