Founded in 1893, the Town of Cornelius formed from the bustling mill and farming community that made up the area. The second of Mecklenburg County's six incorporated towns, Cornelius bears its name from J B Cornelius, principle stockholder in the cotton mill established in the late 1800s.
As the mills began to close and the cotton industry lost its financial influence in the area, the creation of Lake Norman by Duke Power in 1963 by damning the Catawba River provided the area with recreational opportunities, lakeside real estate and hydroelectric power. In addition, the development of I77 and the growth of nearby Charlotte, NC has helped boost development in the town of 20,000 in recent years.
Today, Cornelius is defined by lake living and growth. Many flock to the area to be close to the largest man made lake in NC and a short commute to the city of Charlotte, North Carolina.
